Any more than there is anything intrinsically good about humans. Plenty of them working on new and ghastly things, too. There is always someone ready to rationalise their work on weapons. "If I don't do it someone else will" and variations of "I don't hold a hose" are the most popular. Also well-represented is "the discoveries we make can be used in peacetime, too" and "I work on weapons to defend us, not attack others". Watch all the same excuses turning up for AI too. Why anyone would imagine that AI, uniquely in the history of humanity, would be used only for good, is beyond me. The Pollyannas and the Panglosses seem to be out in for AI.
