However proficiency in English is an integral part of any Australian university 
degree.  Even if students with limited English can be taught successfully in 
the first place, a graduate who cannot communicate properly with their work 
colleagues, patients, clients, etc. presents a liability to themselves and 
others.

Many years ago, if I remember correctly, a professor of engineering at UNSW 
made English a compulsory course for students in that Faculty (with howls of 
protest!).

For better or worse, English is now also an international lingua franca.
