I too am attempting to download the "structure". I'm on a T1 and it still tells me I have 4 days 9 hours more to wait. no picnic! I'll tell you for sure ... SuSE 7.0 (ISOs available @ ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com/pub/ (this was the only site I found worked)) was a breeze to install compared to RH 7.2. At least SuSE provides ISOs (albeit old!) and they had no problem "detecting" my hardware. NO OCO to manipulate. I'm only doing RH 7.2 because of familiarity & 2.4.x kernel (CDL support). If SuSE had their current 7.2 2.4.x kernel ISOs available to download, I would not waste my time on RH. Instead I ordered the SuSE CD's and will have to pay to use. (not happy, but okay with this). I installed RH 7.1 on two production servers (PC) and one laptop (6 times) last month and they were no problem. I want s/390 to be successful but the vendors had better get with the project to make the process easier. SuSE by far leads the pack in S/390 install process. (just my opinion of course)

Well, having the ISO images ready-made for you would make it simpler to burn your own CDs, but you don't really need those to install. The Redhat FTP site has a directory tree of the complete distribution, which you can simply download. You can install straight from that. If you really want to burn your own CDs, you need to do a bit more work, as the tree needs to be split in two or three parts that each fit on a single CD, after which you can simply use the mkisofs utility to create the ISO images. The tricky part is the splitting of the tree in 3 parts. The simplest would be if you had file lists of someone else's CD set. Without that, you need to experiment a bit. The install procedure will want some key files on the first CD, and the rest (most of the RPMs and SRPMs) can be spread more or less at will over the 3 CDs, I think. Not sure, though, I never tried this myself, just heard it explained. <SNIP>
