In the "ISP/ASP" Redbook, we mentioned the idea of using NBD (Network Block Device) and software RAID or LVM to produce a disk mirroring facility (sort-of a poor man's PPRC). In the form that it was mentioned in the book its probably not something you'd use in anger, but I thought it fascinating that the building blocks are out there.
