We're actually using IBM's CA-1 equivalent as we're on a 'rid our shop of
CA products' quest due to their insane pricing structures.

I'm not sure how I would get a process on a linux LPAR to send a message to
the S/390 console either.
To clarify my situatuion:

I have ONE tape drive available, which lives in the magstar library. I
have not as yet defined it to Linux because I'm not sure how to 'part time'
own the thing. I can't have it 24/7. We have an s/390 side automation tool,
Ops/MVS which I suspect could be used to telnet into the linux LPAR, vary
the device off to the various systems in the sysplex, make it available on
the linux LPAR and then have amanda go to work. I don't know how cumbersome
that would be either. Still would be better than Tar and FTP I susepct.

Anyone have any ideas on how to best implement what I just outlined? (the
automation tool stuff)

The problem

Yes, like most other Unix tape backup utilities, it includes it's own TMS
independent of other systems. You will need to write a small tool to signal
the operators what tape to mount on the drive in your environment (use the
tape changer exit to issue a 'hcp MSG OPERATOR Mount <volser> on xxx' type
thing), but Amanda keeps track of what file is on what tape and is fairly
straightforward about restores.

If you use something like CA-1 or such, don't expect Amanda to update that
TMC without some extra coding.
