Ok I may be guilty of not giving this too much thought..... If the DASD is only used by a single Linux, then if that Linux system were to issue a RESERVE CCW that would stop any OS/390 systems from touching it. Could be maybe a new "/proc/dasd/devices" option.
Just food for thought. It's been a while since I've done it, but I believe ICKDSF will not initialize (format) a volume that is online to the system. So, your best bet may be to use the CDL disk layout and make sure they get varied online to your OS/390 systems. Then you can use DF/DSS to back them up, they won't look empty to your co-workers, etc. Mark Post -----Original Message----- From: Dave Myers [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, June 07, 2002 5:33 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: What's best way to protect Linux Disk from OS/390? What is the best way to avoid tromping on your Linux 3390 disks by OS/390 ickdsf etc. I'm assuming I can't use HCD to isolate these disks to the VM and/or Linux LPARs....since I want to use either DFDSS or OFFLINDR to back them up. These volumes are OFFLINE to OS/390 most of the time and could be mistakenly selected as new empty disk packs by fellow sysprogs.... Besides good doc...is there a way to protect these disks?
