Just to make sure the point is clear: my first modem *could* do
autodialling, without tone capability.  It obviously was not
acoustic-coupled, but it *did* do pulse dialling.  Still does, in fact.
It's right over here: a Hayes Micromodem 300.  It's a Hayes modem that
long predates the Hayes command set.
