Some businesses see it either way. I've dealt with companies who see the GPL as essential because "If we contribute why the hell should our competitors get our contributions and we don't get theirs" It also depends on your goal. The Berkeley license worked brilliantly for the TCP/IP stack. DARPA funded a reference implementation, almost everyone used it and the university got its name everywhere. Its one of the great success stories of research funding ;) Alan
