And if you set up the tooling for this _in advance_ and do some practice runs with it, when it comes time for that Sev1 problem, it won't feel awkward. One of the reasons I call z/VM a "system programmer's operating system." Makes my life a whole lot easier than it would be without it.
For those folks that want to spend the money, though, they could enable the 3270 support in the kernel, and contact UTS Global to buy their 3270-enabled ned editor for Linux/390. (I wish I had the money to do that with myself. I can always use another good tool in my toolbox.) Quite often even that is tedious since I want network access as well (e.g. pick up a new package from somewhere - mind you, not floppies) and maybe even outside its normal network configuration. The reason people settle for local console is that they're used to not having more than that. With z/VM you can simply have one of your trusted Linux servers link to the disks in write mode (when the owner is dead) and do all changes and modifications that you need to fix the problem. You then unmount the disks and start the server again. > The second primary issue is the lack of a syslinux or the ability to > boot I suspect this is the same issue, but right now you can already have patches that allow you to select the kernel parameters throuh LOADPARM on the IPL statement, and more is coming later.
