The primary recommendation I'd make for Java is
"just say no". If you can't do that then look at whether
the java you have is compilable with the current
GNU gcj kit.

On boxes with a lot of CPU power Java is merely a pain (and
a lot of the hit is initially JITting and setting up of the
application and libraries) so once its up its not too bad
given astronomical amounts of RAM (also cheap on PC platforms)

With everything compiled and no large SQL database mess you can do
4 hits/second on a MacII.. ;)
