Hello folks,

The ssh issue for CMS has been a topic on and off on this list for quite
a while. At the last "Hillgang" VM user's group, I asked 2 IBM
representatives about an SSH client for CMS. They told me they did not
have plans for ssh support in CMS. Previous to the ssh request, I
requested an enhancement to XEDIT/UPDATE for BFS update support. The
later was considered but later rejected. The reason for the rejection
for the xedit requests was that the enhancement did not fit into IBM's
vision for VM as a hyper-visor. I interpreted the response to mean "no
enhancements to CMS". I assume the same vision applies to ssh.

IBM did say that if enough requests were made for ssh support in CMS,
they would consider it. It is my opinion that CMS is an important tool
for working with z/VM Linux. Apparently rexec is worthwhile but ssh is
not.

The only way IBM will address this issue is by members on this mailing
list making formal requests for ssh support in CMS. We are IBM
customers, therefore IBM needs to address or needs.

Thanks for the reply.
I am actually looking SSH client for z/VM that I can use instead of
REXEC.

Kinda-sorta. We did a proxy server last year that uses a Linux guest
and allows you to create a tunneled SSH connection to your z/VM telnet
port. Basically, you run ssh in tunnel mode locally to establish a
connection to the Linux guest, which then does an unecrypted connection
to the VM service. Then you connect your client to your local port, and
all external communication is protected by the SSH tunnel.

If you meant, "is there a native CMS SSH implementation," not that I'm
aware of. I think Neale did an implementation several years ago under
OE, but it's really ancient by now.
