And to think I had a VM LDAP server 3rd(*) on my list of things to
do to keep me occupied. Integrating it with various other things
was definitely not on the list.

Y'know, it strikes me that what we need is a sort of Free VM
Software Foundation that's sponsored by various companies
and pays the multitude of retired and currently redundant VM
people to actually produce this stuff that we all keep talking about.
Get it to give out VM userids to everyone, set up an appropriate
organisation structure, pay some people to keep things on schedule
whilst others can contribute in their free time as they want to...

Sigh. I know. Pipe dream...

(*) First on the list is PL/ROD (or, as I like to call it due to it's
not-very-quickness, PLOD) for running pipes on the PC. (**)
Second is my CVS server for VM. Deciphering the protocol
was the irritating bit. The rest is just a SMOP.

(**) Yes, it works. No it's not ready for public release yet. Yes,
I will get it sorted one day. No, not soon as I've no enthusiasm
at the moment.
