Depends on what 50% busy actually means. If you have two processors then 50% busy may mean that the process has pegged one processor and is not multi-threaded. I don't know if this is what is happening. Just a guess.

How far away (network-wise) are you from the system? In any case, this is why I prefer software that doesn't force you to use X-based tools. Most of my systems are _very_ remote from me, and I can't stand the slowness. You might consider installing VNC. My understanding is that it isn't as bad as "normal X," what ever that means.
