Do you mean tape marks between files are needed? Or shouldn't be there? I moved the boot files over from the CD under Linux, but still got either full or partial failure (usually mounting the ramdisk root FS) till I reformatted the files to end on a 1K boundary, and removed the tape marks between files.
The really odd thing about it was that I went back and tried to boot the install kernel from my SLES8 setup, and got exactly the same problem, but I KNOW everything was left exactly as it was when I successfully installed SLES8. Of course, that was 2 or 3 versions of Hercules ago. I tried the reader, got the same error, and couldn't find sensible doc for how to make it work. Brought the CD's to the office, and tried on real iron under VM using the VM reader, and that worked, so it had to be something in my setup. Even tried backing down one release of Hercules, but no luck till I fixed the tape image. One question bugging me though: Is the PARMFILE supposed to be in ASCII or EBCDIC? I tried it both ways, but I forget which finally worked. When I tried it under VM, it was in ASCII, but some old docs I found via Google search seem to imply it should be in EBCDIC. That's where I got the idea that the files should be even multiple of 1K. Also ran into a problem first time with recognizing the CTC read device, but restarting cleared that up. I'll be trying to complete the install tonight. > -----Original Message----- > From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of > Adam Thornton > Sent: Tuesday, November 23, 2004 10:59 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [LINUX-390] SLES9 Evaulation Download - ISO problems? > > > On Nov 23, 2004, at 7:00 AM, Hall, Ken (IDS ECCS) wrote: > > > > > Started to install under Hercules last night, but there > seems to be a > > problem with it's emulation of tape, because I couldn't get the > > install system to boot following the instructions.
