We have a few hundred PCs, (Win/2000) that are using Windows Shares. That is, they went to the Sharing tab in Properties on a folder and specified to share a folder.
And with my lack of Windows knowledge, I'm trying to share some Samba directories in the same maner. I do have some of Samba sharing working just fine. I can do a: Net use e: \\192.168.99.222\tomd and my PC has access to the Samba share. We have been doing this for a few years, but all PCs were on the same subnet and it was limited to a few people. But, of course things are changing. (which keeps everyone employed) When I bring up Windows Explorer, and go to "computers near me", the Samba server isn't listed. I've been reading the "The Offical Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide", and it starts getting into "configuring Workgroup Browsing". Well, the terms being used are Windows stuff and mostly foreign to me. It says that I need to setup a Samba server as the Domain Master Browser, which is not the same as the Primary Domain Controller. But this discussion seems to be centered on the complete replacement of Windows with Linux (nice goal, not going to happen). Seems like a lot of work just to "join" an existing Windows workgroup called "Workgroup". Could be, that I just haven't read far enough (page 109 of 500+ pages) or I'm in the wrong chapter or the wrong manual for that matter. So, am I on the right path or is there an easy way to join a Windows workgroup? Net effect, I want the "Computers Near Me" to show my Samba servers.
