This is why Adam recommended using rpmbuild. It _may_ (no guarantees) have detected that you didn't have libtermcap-devel installed (or whatever the SUSE equivalent is).
This type of error is one of my biggest gripes with developers. They don't have ./configure check for everything that will cause the make process to die. This is something that should be reported as a bug.
