Well, from my viewpoint, there is one very big minus to doing the ECKD emulation on the host (mainframe). How much CPU will it cost me? How does the cost of the host CPU compare to the cost of the CPU in the dasd box? Can this processing be done in some other "special purpose" CP (like an IFL or zAAP) so that my OEM software costs are not impacted when I need more "dasd emulation" power? These are concerns of mine because we had planned on replacing our IBM 3494-B18 VTS with CA-VTAPE. This emulates 3490 drives on the host z/OS system. It puts the virtual tape volumes on host DASD. They can then be "back stored" onto high capacity media like 3592. Unfortunately, it has consistantly cost us over 10% of a z890, capacity model 250, when we did full volume backups to it. We have decided to go with a -B20 instead.
