I just updated my sles9 (64bit) installation with the June samba 3.0.14a
packages.
Now "net ads join -Uusername" results in the completely opaque (to me)
message "Bus error".
"bus error" is a signal inheritted from someone's minicomputer (DEC
maybe?). It doesn't occur on IA32 (where I'm most at home these days) or
AFAIK on zBoxes.
When it occurs it generally points to some kind of software error (such
as executing ramdom code*) or (on toys) memory errors.
* Many years ago when MVS was new I had an assembler program tried to
read a file that hadn't opened. On SVS the results were different (0Cx).
The offending instruction went
GET INPUT
The result was a load of R15 and a BALR 14,15
R15 pointed to location 48 or thereabouts, and on that version of MVS
there happened to be
BR R12
R12 was my base register.
Moral: don't assume execution of random code necessarily results in a
program check.
In your case, running the offending program under strace may prove
illuminating.
