If the join is failing and smbd is crashing, it's time to revert to the
older version while you try to get the problem fixed.

The samba rpm's came from portal.suse.com under the CORE 9 for zseries.
I they were all labelled 390x.

The command "net ads join" was issued from the linux server. I need it
to be a member server in an AD 2003 domain.

It all worked before I updated samba -- sort of. There were some known
bugs that the latest and greatest RPMs were supposed to fix.

Now I'm really fixed. smbd crashes on startup.

If I can't get it working this evening I'll be desperately calling
someone in the morning.
