Sorry I missed the earlier part of the thread if this was already covered..
We had a similar issue with Oracle on AIX, it was only a problem with a multi-homed guest. In that circumstance oracle defaulted to looking at the hosts file to know what interface / name itself was. By reading the full install manual for Oracle 10g for Linux x86-64, (several hundred pages, instead of the 20 or so pages for a quick install), I found that it seemed to need an entry in the /etc/hosts file. I didn't have one. Yast Network Services Host Names Great, now one is in. I started looking at my older Linux images. Most don't have an entry in the /etc/hosts file. Some do. I have a documentation folder for each Linux image I've created. I don't have any entries on me creating entries in the 'hosts' file. So, in trying to understand this futher.... Is entries in the /etc/hosts file, really required? Or is it "older" technology, that normally is replaced by some other function? Now when I look at it, it would seem to be requried. After all, I'm naming this node on the network. But, I also thought that when I created the Host Name, and Name Server Configuration, during the install, a default entry in the /etc/hosts file would have been setup, if this was such an important entry. So, is this more current, or obsolete in SLES9? Thanks Tom Duerbusch THD Cosulting (What kind of mistakes do ghosts make?
