I would really like the ability to *boot* into single mode or multi-user mode. I'm looking for an easier way to do this.
We don't want to change the runlevel with init. I'm not sure how to boot into a different runlevel in zLinux, but from a running system you can use the "init" or "telinit" command to change runlevels. So to enter into single user without network, enter: # init 1 For more info, do a "man init".
