If half the system memory wasn't currently being used for cache, I'd have done 
that. Being there appears to be plenty of memory, I'm not sure this is
the correct answer. I think someone did someting and is not aware of having 
made a change.

I don't have exclusive control over this instance, sadly.

Give the memory back, see if the problem goes away.
