Everything in IBM ultimately comes down to money: who gets it, who has to give it. Fedora and OpenSuse haven't got any money to give, and IBM doesn't see how they'll get any from the non-enterprise customer by supporting them.
Hello David, I believe it is fair to say that IBM has directly or indirectly (shares etc.) funded both Redhat and Novell-Suse, and has very close working relationships with both distributors. IBM developers are working on the latest Linux kernel levels as can be seen from 2.6.23, therefore surely IBM already has a financially vested interest in the testing of this code by as wide a range of users as possible. As both Fedora and Opensuse are openly stated as being a testbase for future Enterprise code in RHEL and SLES, then IBM can only benefit from supporting them, directly or indirectly ;-) Remember that a non-enterprise user/customer can still be a very useful (free) tester for future Enterprise code destined for Enterprise customers. The goal of an Enterprise level distribution is stability and reliability (and as IBM once said about z/OS stayupability!), and that surely comes mainly through thorough testing.
