Hello !
I have prepared this kind of DVD a few times. It consist of kernel, big
ramdisk which has all tools needed and a few scripts which:
1. Prepoare DASD (dasdfmt, fdasd, and mke2fs)
2. Move ramdisk to dasd
3. Make zipl active on target dasd
4. As option - prepare basic configuration in etc on dasd (the best way
is to use chroot)
I dont use Suse but rather Debian and all was done with Debian, but I
tested own kernel and BusyBox cross-compiled on may Linux Laptop - works
good.
BTW - this was advanced topic for students in the lab - How to run Linux
on the mainframe with kernel and tools in file system :-)

The normal installer does a dialog where network device, IP address,
FTP server, directory, userid, password etc is determined. You will
need to code that into your initrd that your burn on the CD, or fine
another way to pass that info.
I think, this can be done with short bash script - dialog with user,
similar to that witch is in sles or debian during installation.
Really, just use the SLES9 CD/DVD you got from Novell. That will allow you to
do what you want, and you can then SSH in after the network is up and do what
you need to do.

Ok, now I know that without network and remote repository this is
impossible
(from sles manual:
IPL from CD-ROM
When planning to IPL from CD-ROM, keep in mind that only
the boot files will be loaded. The other data contained on the CD
must be accessed from the network. Make a copy of the CD or
copy its contents onto the FTP, NFS, or SMB server first.)
So if Novell can't access data from HMC drive, neither will I.
It's not impossible, it just requires you to hook up the HMC to the same
network that your LPAR is on. Then, you can use the FTP server built into the
HMC. This is easy to do, but most mainframe security people forbid it. So,
its not a technical problem at all.
I think this one will be the best scenario :
IPL a starter from CD with script which will ask for adress of DASD,
NIC , format DASD etc, connect to ftp where I will keep all needed files,
download them and do zipl. Should work ? :)
Only few hours on LINUX-390 and I know a lot of more, thanks again.
As I said, just use the CD/DVD you got from Novell. It will save you a lot of
time and trial and error.
