VDISK is a much better idea for swap. VDISK is also, inherently, VFB-512. So it's not going to be, ever, ECKD. If you use SWAPGEN to format it, you end up with the swap partition on /dev/dasdX1, which sounds like what you want to do (SWAPGEN, in default operation, does a CMS FORMAT and RESERVE on the device; the RESERVED file then shows up to the DASD driver as partition 1). Presuming you don't mind IPLling CMS before you IPL Linux, SWAPGEN really will make your life easier.
