David,

I know I can get a 'loaner' of z/VM. But my z/VM skills are quite old, very
rusty, and I was never a (z/)VM Sysprog, anyway. I'm a (z/)VSE Sysprog! I
know, there are 'cookbooks' (I have them). And while I wouldn't mind a z/VM
trial, I wouldn't want it to go away in a few months, and then not have
anything running. I'd rather have it running, sans z/VM, and then add z/VM
later.

As for running in an LPAR, one must make do with what one has available...

Talk to your IBM people. z/VM loaners are easily available if you ask.

Mostly because the economics of Linux in LPARs doesn't work very well.
The virtualization component of z/VM is what makes it interesting.
