Mantissa Corp (http://www.mantissa.com/) has made some significant progress on
developing
a technically viable x86 emulator/simulator. By technically viable I mean that
it runs
well enough to support x86 applications (maybe Windows-based, maybe other x86
based ones)
in a production environment on present day z10 hardware. Their
emulator/simulator is not
based on zLinux, btw. Gary Dennis gave a good overview of why they are doing
this, some of
the technical issues they had to overcome and some design decision that they
made in the
development of zVOS. I expect to see a beta of zVOS supporting x86 Linux on
z/VM early
summer, and if all goes well there, a beta of Windows on z/VM late summer.
