Haven't tried SUSE, but did try z/VM install via FTP from z/OS Unix filesystem.
Couldn't get it to work - don't remember the exact issues. Ended up just
installing an FTP server on my PC and installing from that. There are lots of
free ones. Saved me a few steps and time in the long run.

Just be sure you are binary FTP'ing on both the upload and the install.
Otherwise you might run into code page translate issues and corrupted files.

Subject: SuSE install from z/OS

We have multiple z/OS 1.9 lpars and I am in the process of a SLES SP2 install,
only I am curious as to whether anyone has attempted the installation from
z/OS. I have already FTP'ed both DVD's into the UNIX file system on z/OS, and
wish to serve the data from that point during the install. Anyone tried this?
Thanks.

Ross
