the Atari palmtop mentioned in an earlier port is called the Portfolio.
while it is a nifty machine (i own one), and the first palmtop PC
available in the US, it's probably not a target for elks anytime soon.
it has an 80c86, 40x16 (iirc) somewhat-cga compatible display, and 128k
ram/storage space stock. it doesn't have pcmcia, but a mitsubishi
removable memory card slot. oneof it's nicest features is to be able to
run a program (if properly developed) directlyfrom the memory card.
the sharp palmtop is the portfolio's older brother, both of which are
actually designed by a company named DIP in the UK. it's more capable
with a 80c186, true cga, 1mb ram, type I PCMCIA slot, et al. it might
be able to one day run elks comfortably.
the poqet i never had much info on, but the faq is interesting and i may
pick one up soon and play around.
of course, i still stand by the hp line of palmtops, especially the 200lx.
186 compatible chip (actually a c&t hornet cpu, has limited mmu support,
there are even drivers availble to use the internal ram drive as ems 4.0
using the hardware for memory management), cga compatible with special
graphics modes, pcmcia type II v2.0 slot, serial port, and anywhere from
1mb to 64mb ram.
i use the 200lx daily for e-mail, c, reading, jotting notes, as a serial
console for sparcs, and just about everything else i've ever used a
computer for. i have a 20mb intel 2+ (linear) flash card, so i haven't
been able toplay with the minix hack (http://www.erols.com/~rld). i've
seen used 95lx's go for $50, and they are readily availble all over the
place (i'm not too sure if hp still makes them, though they were last
year).
yeah, i'd love to see elks on the LXs... :] i hope i'm not alone
