I totally agree. Never have I known so many people using unix on a
desktop. Previously `unix-desktop' meant some sparc nightmare or other, now
it means linux. And I don't mean just engineers and scientists (like
myself) I've seen lots people from marketing / product design etc.. using
linux because of the applications available (e.g. GIMP). Less computer
lirate people who work in environments where sharing files between
themselves is their only concern now find the Linux+StarOffice
combination a `breath of fresh air'.

Unix on a desktop was never very available to people until now.

Yeah, me too, It's just that now linux really kicks ass on multi-processor
systems too (on MP systems 2.2.x was ok (~NT), 2.4.x is *amazing* (>NT).
Performance on MP machines was 2.4's main brief, no? consolidate/dominate
server market).

no i don't have access. I shouldn't have to shell out $200+ for the same
tools I can get for free under Linux.

Can u tell me why I'd pay anything, let alone $200+, for Win2k to get
the tools I can get for free with another product?

WHy can't Microsoft put these same tools in Windows 98 or ME?
Do I not deserve them if I'm not a sys admin or a corporation?

That sounds like a pretty lame excuse.

I've used countless different keyboard configurations, often several
within the same day, and never had such difficulties, nor have I ever
heard of anybody else who touch types having such difficulties within
the same environment (university campus)

You are truly an idiot. What you're talking about is MIS-APPLICATION
of an IQ test. All you're proving is that the foreigner is not totally
proficient in the local langauge.

By your logic, physics is invalid because if I were to give you a
physics test written in Swahili, the results show you to have far
less knowledge of physics than what you really have.

*IF* IQ tests are supposedly invalid, then why do the scores correlate
sooooooo well with everything we know about the differences between
being smart and being an embecile? Such as incarceration for crimes,
social status, income, etc.

High IQ people figure out better how to stay out of jail, and how to
maximize their social status, income, etc. better than low-IQ people.
Which is exactly what anybody with a whit of common sense could guess.

All you're proving is that giving a test to someone in a language
in which they are not proficient produces innaccurate results.

IQ-tests measure what psychologists call intelligence, which they
represent with the symbol "g".

How does that make it more or less like capitalism or communism? I
suggest that making comparisons between a software license and political
ideology are a false analogy and waste of time.

It's just a software license. But since you're having a go at other
open-source licenses: why should you not be able to capitalize on the
work of others without sharing in the cost if that is the aim of the
permissive license? Why is giving away something for free communism?
