As I remember, they're lists associated with files or other objects in
which you can set permissions.  For example:  TABITHA and SURYA can read
this, ORACLE, KENOLSON and PEEWEE can write to it, those in the CLUEFUL
group can execute it, and anyone with the NOSTRADAMUS identifier can
delete it.
