I'm using lpr to track printer usage in my college - it's quite effective
(maintains track of pages printed per user, per printer, also the names of
documents printed, date and time etc. Could even be extended (which I am
planning to do) to detect the printer resolution to charge users according
to the type of print outs takes. I put up a CUFP at
http://perlmonks.orgindex.pl?node=Cool%20Uses%20for%20Perl
if you're interested.
i'm attaching the scripts with this mail, as they are quite small.
note : these are working, but seriously beta, and they only work for
postscript printers (though if you're desperate enough, i'm sure you could
get them to work by redirecting through other filters etc. etc..)
