A couple of ideas:
1) is there a AT&F in the script? (AT&F recalls the factory defaults) If
there is, the ATM0 must occur later in the script to work. (I don't know
whats going to happen if they are on the same line in the script...)
2) test it (minicom is nice for that)

ATDT<some phone number><ENTER>
