I've replace 'ATZ' with 'AT&F1M0' and it's quiet here.
For the curious: 3Com modems tend to have 2 factory defaults AT&F0
(non-optimized - old Hayes defaults) and AT&F1 (optimized). Unfortunately
anything placed after ATZ (AT&F0 settings restored) or ATZ1 (AT&F1 settings
restored) is often ignored. So ATZ1MO won't work as expected but AT&F1M0
will.
