On my Zoom modems, I use atm0 l0. The l0 sets the volume to off.
A bit redundant, but it doesn't cost extra. Then I write it into nvram
slot 1 with at&w1. This can then be recalled by using atz1.
I'm not sure if the at&w1 will work for a 3com modem or now
though.
