It seems that pppd is defaulting to 'auth' on your system. Place 'noauth'
into your /etc/ppp/options file and it should stop requiring the remote
system to authenticate itself (it should not have to, it's your system that
must authenticate to it). This should clear the problem up for both diald
and your manual connections with ifup.
If you plan to have people dialing into your machine then you will want the
'auth' option, and will have to configure accordingly for those connections.
