Hmmm, if you are doing network oriented stuff you should definitely use a
2.4.x kernel with netfilter. Btw: do you know the Open Router Project?
It's a free project for creating a linux based router and a _very_ network
centered distribution. It lives on http://www.open-router.org.

I don't know what your application is, but if you are using the system for
a commercial product it is a very good idea to compile that stuff
yourself. Otherwise you are in serious problems if your distributor
chooses in his next version to change things in a way that you cannot use
it any more. Mostly embedded systems have such a limited functionality
that it's no real problem to build things from scratch.
