I think you missed the point of the previous response. Let me try yto
explain in more detail:
Like many linux networking programs, ax25 support for linux is in two parts.
The first part, which IS included with the kernel source is the networking
and protocol drivers. This is new to 2.0.36, and in all previous kernels,
you had to download the kernel patch to make the protocols available.
The second part is the utilities package. This inlcudes all of the command
line executables needed to access ax25 and it's sub protocols. This is NOT
part of the kernel, and as far as I know there is no distribution of linux
that comes with this package. This package also includes the man pages
(which since you don't have them proves that you lack this package.)
Ax25-utils-2.1.42a. (with either an rpm extension, or a tar.gz/tgz
extension) is the utilities package. It contains the files you need to get
up and running. http://www.cs.cuhk.hk/pub/Linux/apps/ham/ax25/!INDEX.html
has the utilities package available, as well as many other places like
sunsite.
Please note: You may also have to find a patch to your net-utilities
package for many of the common networking commands to work with ax25. I
don't know whether or not this upgrade is included in any distribution of
linux.
Just because you have the newest kernel does not mean that you have all of
the utilities upgraded to their fullest. The linux kernel and it's
utilities are quite seperate. If you used an older distribution of linux
(that came with kernel 2.0.30) and then patched your kernel up to 2.0.36,
that does not also upgrade all your utilities -- they are not part of the
kernel.
I hope this is useful and makes sense. If you read the ax25 howto, and skip
the kernel patching part since your kernel includes it, you will find all
that I have told you in there.
