In all the time i have used Redhat, i have never once used a rpm file, to
install anything, i always choose the .tar.gz version.
Its more like "a do it myself shop here".

Richard, i dont want to join in and make matters worse, but most of your
problems (if i may say so) have been experianced before by others, mostly
discussed openly on this list, there is an archive at;
http://zone.pspt.fi/archive/linux-hams
It has a serach engine so its esay to use "key" words to look for your
particular problems.
