Of course, you are right. It was too long ago since I last installed 
my gcc package. But the setup routines of the up-to-date 
distributions _require_ you to install the package containing as86 if 
you chose to (re)install gcc, so I didn't remember that as86 was in 
some particular package and not in gcc when I wrote this mail. 
These packages are IMHO always installed together if you use the 
distribution's package manager. Especially on Slackware, they 
also could be reinstalled manually without hassle by unpacking the 
*.tar.gz (assuming you have downloaded the binary packages).
