Thanks for the suggestion, Luiz.

I downloaded the beta .rpm files and tried to install them. There were
conflicts with the existing ax25-utils, but I installed the new
versions anyway using rpm. (Yast would not install the downloaded
files from a directory on my hard disk).

There is no difference. It is still not possible to bind ax0 to
/dev/ttyS1 with kissattach .... so I am giving up on SuSE Linux 6.1
for packet.
