Ditto,
I have had the same experience with RH 6.0, but then I could not get my packet
stuff to work properly under RH 5.2 using 2.0.36-17 either. After getting more
practice compiling kernels than I needed, I finally got the baycom modem to
work under RH 5.2 with a 2.2.10 kernel. I should have left it at that but
spent the weekend trying to make it work under RH 6.0 with the 2.5.5 kernel.
With no luck.
Whichever release or kernel you use, you won't stand a chance unless you
install the ax25 utils that are packaged as an rpm (no compiling).
Unfortunately, that package does not offer the example configuration files. So
I got them from the ax25utils package that requires compiling (believe its
version .1.2.42 something or other). You can get the config files loaded from
that package by doing 'make installconf'. At least that worked for me.
When I say 'worked', I mean that it will run the baycom device and still
support the lan on eth0 and eth1. (At one time I had the packet stuff working
but it brought down the local ethernet. I could use one or the other but not
both.) I have no idea what it would do if I tired the other ax25 drivers. I
found that reading the fine print (help screens) and running 'make menuconfig'
will prevent a lot of snafus. There is lots of opportunity to unwittingly
select options that require software you may not have installed. Dependencies
abound. There are good README, and INSTALL files in the 2.2.10 release. I had
to print them out and check off the software upgrades required before the thing
would work for me.
If nothing else I have discovered that Linux's strengths are also its
weakness. Nearly unlimited configuration capabilities can lead to equally
unlimited frustration on the part of folks who try to do non-standard
configurations.
73, and good luck
