        These utilities also run out of the box under Redhat (or, at
        least, they did for me).  Distributions SHOULDN'T make much of
        a difference in this respect.  Kernel versions do.

        It's the difference between finding the RPM binaries and trying
        to download and compile source code (that may be obsolete or
        meant for a different set of libraries).

        Before you start going on compiling sprees, I'd suggest people
        take a look at http://www.rpmfind.net for binary versions of
        your packages.
