We have that now -- that's exactly what Craig's ax25-tools and
ax25-apps packages are intended to be. They work. They're recompilable
(I rebuilt ax25-tools locally the other day). If they don't work on
your system with the RH 6 libc6.1 library and includes, then I suspect
Craig wants to know about it so it can be fixed (or rather,
worked around).

What do you think is lacking? I see all the functionality of ax25-utils
(except smdiag and a few other soundmodem related thinks, all X-based
anyway).
I did submit a bug report and a patch to Craig through Debian's bug
tracking system because smmixer and sethdlc do not support -i to set
the interface to work on; I haven't heard from Craig yet about it
but I hope the patch or a similar fix will appear in future versions;
without it, you can't use sethdlc except on bc0 (no good if you use
soundmodem). Otherwise I've had zero problems.
Cheers
