Well, in Australia I believe we are expected to ID every 10 minutes during
a QSO. I suppose that every 10 minutes should be good enough for packet
too.

True, but VJ has also been used for SLIP links so it's not PPP specific.
I don't know enough about it; it might still be point-to-point specific.
