RJ45/CAT5 building wiring systems are often used for other than other 
than ethernet/token ring. The full 4 pairs are used for RS232 systems (I 
have a nice little collection of D25 - RJ45 converters) and I think 7-8 
are used for POTS systems (It's all sorted in the IT services room)0.
