You shouldn't need authentication for DHCP, it's a lower level network
service. With a dial-in account the primary reason for authentication is to
protect the ISP from being used by people who aren't paying for the service.
DSL being a permanent connection doesn't have that problem.
I should qualify that statement. Most DSL connections won't require
authentication. Pacific Bell here in California might be requiring
authentication for their cheapest DSL connection. I don't have all the
details, but I overheard a friend talking about having to login every time
they start Netscape even though they have DSL. I assume if this is the case
that this is done to minimize the number of IP addresses Pacific Bell has to
own. Unfortuneatly that friend is running Windows so I can't get details
there on how to connect with Linux.
I have put Linux and FreeBSD machines on our corporate network which uses
DHCP to assign IPs and have not had to do any configuration for
authentication. If the DHCP server is configured properly the DHCP
negotiation should tell your machine what the proper gateway is.

Subject: DSL and DHCPD
Greetings folks, just got my dsl connection yesterday and I was
hoping to port the Linux server, which runs ax25-utils, over to the
dynamic account. I run RH 6.1 and have the dhcpd installed for the
second NIC interface, which is configured as the outside interface. I
have taken a stab at configuring ipchains to masquerade all internal
machines too that interface. where I am confused, now is where do I put
in the authentication data for username/password ? I make use of diald
on another system and have pap-secrets in the /etc/ppp dir. Is there
such a format for dhcpd (maybe the /etc/dhcpc dir.?). Looking for a
site to help me configure the setup. Someone mentioned one but I lost
the email. I could use some help as there really is no Gateway to point
to during the negotiation other than the multicast portion 224.0.0.0.
I have some more work to do on the rc.ipchains script to add the
slattach port for the Jnos/Tnos application and the 44 domain IP's.
Thank you in advance. Hope to see more amateurs on DSL as time go on.
