While other posters summed it up best by pointing out that DHCP is more
of a network configuration protocol, and has no means to authenticate a
user, some DSL providers *do* authenticate by using PPP over Ethernet
(PPPoE).  So when your system becomes active, it has simple network
access over DSL, but in order to get to the outside world, you'd need
to establish a sort of PPP link *over* your existing DSL link.  You would
then authenticate via normal PPP mechanisms and have a high-speed PPP
connection to the Internet.

Unfortunately, I don't have experience setting this type of thing up
under Linux, but if your DSL provider does indeed use something like this,
this is what you need to look in to.
