Hi John --

I missed your original posting or I would have followed up. I'm not
sure, but I think the problem you're seeing is due to the callsign
substitution that's done by the Linux call programs. The problem is
that there is a fixed callsign to IP address mapping in the axip
routing tables. If a user connects via call or node, his own callsign
will be used as the source call. Data routed via the axip link will
travel out, but the node at the far end will see the user's callsign,
and have no idea what to do with it. So, data will go in but won't
come out.

To test this, try connecting using the same callsign as the one defined
as the axip link address. If that works, this is the explanation.

I believe this isn't a problem in xNOS axip gateways, because they use
a separate link callsign for every axip route, and the call translation
is done locally -- in other words, the axip link looks like a digi path
and the user callsign doesn't affect routing. Linux, on the other
hand, uses only a single call for all the links, and therefore has to
rely on the source callsign to gain routing info.

Bob Meyer has done a couple of things that work around this problem.
He's created a version of the call program that lets you set the source
callsign to whatever you want, which can solve the problem in some
cases. He's also come up with a modified version of ax25ipd that, I
think, may be the real answer. I haven't tried it yet, but from a
message Bob posted some time ago, it apparently learns the route for a
callsign from the initial connect request, and builds a routing table
accordingly. It that means what I think it does, it sounds like the
real answer. You can get the modified ax25ipd at ftp://bob.midtown.net/
ax25ipd/ax25ipd. The call program is at the same site, but I don't
have the exact URL handy.

I also have some discussion of this at my web site,
http://www.febo.com/linux-ax25/index.html.

Hope this helps!
