This isn't a newsgroup for hams to give advice to other hams on any old
topic. It is specifically for questions about ham-related linux
applications. There are plenty of other newsgroups to answer
non-ham-specific linux questions. To quote the welcome message for this
list:

Linux-hams is a mailing list to discuss the Linux operating system in
relation to it's uses with Amateur Radio. Anyone with an interest in
both subjects is encouraged to subscribe.

Basic Linux questions are not in the scope of this list. If you have a
question about Linux that doesn't directly pertain to Amateur Radio,
you
mail wish to join the linux-newbie mailing list. You can do this by
sending a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a body of
  "subscribe linux-newbie".

As others have requested, everyone please do your part to optimize the
signal to noise ratio. That's the way newsgroups and listserves work.
